Pirates is done!
1 Comment.New stuff
Hey, It has been a very long time since I have posted. I am having fun at DD working on features, doing stuff with thier volumetric renderer (smoke clouds and stuff). Got an apartment, my car got here, everything is going great. I have been playing alot of Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, which is a kick ass game which should be optioned sometime.
1 Comment.Landed my first gig!
Well, It has been a while since I posted, not like more than three people have seen this site ![]()
I got the position at Digital Domain. I am super happy about it. Sure, there are all the horror stories about the place, but the fact is that they took me, someone without a degree. I start october third, working on commercials untill I land a position on a feature. Needless to say, I am pumped.
Finding a place to live in the westside is a bit of a problem though. I think I found a good option though, with a dude who works at Luma. Oddly enough, they never called my refrences ![]()
I am driving back to SAV on thursday or something, where I get to deal with a supposed mess. Oh, Bother.
Storm training
Well, it looks like I have to ship out to LA once again, this time for a training session in Digital Domain’s Storm volume rendering system. I am really proud of getting invited to this, both Sean and Andrew are going to be there (check the links on the right). Storm looks pretty kick ass, I am just a bit worried about the class. Is it going to be mostly technical, or perhaps more artisic in nature? I am not sure. I hope I will do well in it.
1 Comment.Mid-SIGGRAPH update
First of all, SideEffects knows how to party. The houdini event last night was one of the coolest meetings at siggraph, with a great (but distant) venue, an awesome staff, and an open bar. Houdini 8 looks amazing, the new DOPs context is going to be very nice, and since it is just another context with a whole new set of attributes, expressions will be easier than ever. I am reinstalling TCMP on my palm so i can show my reel around, i deleted it by accident
. The SCAD party and renderman users group are both tonight, i am looking forward to both of them. speaking of SCAD, Sean Palmer (check the link at right) is interviewing with Blue Sky today! he dropped off his reel yesterday, they called him at the houdini party, and now he is over there hopefully getting hired. talk about fast turn around times
Demo Reel Online!

This is in case the div link does not work.
No Comments.Demo Reel Complete!
Well, my cards got in, and they look great. However, I recived like 1000 other very nice cards destined for a real estate agent in sunny california. I called up overnight prints, and they cleared it with the dude. Still, very strange. Anyway, my demo reel is done, it will be on the site by midnight tonight. I will be on a plane in a few hours, very very excited about Siggraph!
No Comments.M1A2 Abrams breakdown.
Well, this is the first post of actual 3d work on clivefx.com! This is a breakdown of my old M1-A2 tank I did for Kirt Witte’s maya class. The final render was in metal ray with final gathering. you can see it Here.
Well, here is my card design. I paid a painful sum to have it printed, but I can call it an “investment” as opposed to “procrastination”. I am throwing my reel together over the next few days, I am going to keep it short and go heavy on the breakdowns. In other news, I have fallen in love with my clie:
Using it is like stepping into a beta release of the future, an episode of the Jetsons where the flying cars tumble from the sky at random and the shave-o-matic is close cousins with jack the ripper. Yet these significant and perilous kinks do not outweigh the benefits of robot maids and laser guitars.
Today, I needed to get Delta’s customer service number to clear up some arcane skymiles issue. I was at Crites, so I flipped out the tiny god and searched for an access point. I found no less than 10 SCAD WAPs. Upon connecting, I had to jump though of the standard hoops of mobile internet: In order to actually use the WAP, you had to point to www.scad.edu and fill out your username and password, which secures roughly an hour of net time before you have to do it again. This does not happen on laptops, as laptops are able to have more than one browser window at a time, and thus a small popunder constantly refreshes the connection. In the case of PDAs, every so often you have to reset the login. Arduous as it may sound, a few seconds spent setting up shortcuts (macros) in the prefs lets you get down to business in seconds.
As for the business, it was only seconds later that I had found the number on the Delta site. Copying and pasting it to my address book was another second still. Then, to top it all off, I dialed the number on my phone using bluetooth, where I spoke to a robot until I was transferred to Bangalore.
I can email from it, I can listen to streaming mp3s and I can take 2mp photos with it. The device is a scant 2 years old, yet it was selling on ebay for a fourth of it’s initial MSRP. It is absolutely amazing, and for 200 bucks, you too can afford the future. Oh, did I mention that I can play my demo reels on it? or have the whole SIGGRAPH schedule neatly laid out in the datebook? Science and Industry man, amazing stuff.
Shuttle went up today! Good job NASA! I hope I can make it to the next launch.
New design
Well, after learning up on CSS and throwing together some temp graphics, this is the site so far. As it stands, the colors are a bit off and the header image is not quite done yet, but I am pretty proud of it. I got the NZ-90 a few days ago, it is an amazing little peice of technology. I was trying to post an image from it’s camera, but I could not get it to upload directly out of it’s memory. I know I can FTP it, but it is the principle of the matter!
I have been rounding up my old work, and I am working on a list of items for my reel. In no order whatsoever:
Mars Science Rover project
M1A2 tank project
Jet engine blowing up (movie)
The Castle project
The stupid renderman mech thing
Project Orion
maybe the beer project, if it is actually good.
I don’t think I am forgetting anything. I need to re-render out the ooold stuff, (speaking of old, I could put the plane project in from vsfx 110) and re-render most of the new stuff anyway. Hopefully the farm will be clear this week, as I need to get it “done” by sometime mid-week in order to have time to dupe it and get covers printed.
-Clive out.
